Finmeccanica-AgustaWestland announced today that the AW139 intermediate twin and the AW189 super medium twin helicopter fleets operated by Gulf Helicopters of Qatar have set two major milestones. Seventeen AW139s used for offshore operations have now achieved 75,000 flight hours while four AW189s have exceeded 1000 flight hours in longer range Oil&Gas support missions.
Gulf Helicopters is a prime player in the helicopter service market in the Middle East and is benefitting from the advantages of the AgustaWestland’s Family of new generation helicopters. The AW139 and AW189, together with the AW169 light intermediate, all possess the same high performance flight characteristics and safety features whilst sharing the same common cockpit concept and design philosophy. This approach delivers real cost savings in areas such as training, maintenance and support for operators having two or three of the models in their fleets.
Mr. Mohamed Al Mohannadi, CEO of Gulf Helicopters stated “We are looking to expand our global presence not only for our core business of helicopter operations but also for our engineering and training capabilities. We are continuing to work with AgustaWestland and other OEMs to complement their efforts in providing efficient services with regard to engineering and training support”.
Gulf Helicopters first ordered the AW139 in 2007 for offshore transport missions as part of its fleet renewal and expansion plans. Gulf Helicopters is also an AgustaWestland authorized service centre for AW139s and also one of the first helicopter companies to have its own AW139 full flight simulator to support its own operations and for third party use. Additionally, Gulf Helicopters was established as an AgustaWestland Authorised Training Centre for the type in September 2013. The operator has a total of fifteen AW189s on order and the relevant training activities will also benefit from the purchase of an AW189 EASA CS-FSTD(H) FFS Level C Simulator from AgustaWestland.

Turkish operator Redstar has taken delivery of a Learjet 45XR, which it will use for VIP transportation. The company acquired its first LR45 last February for medical work. General manager Emre Dursun says that demand for the first unit was high: "Everything was going very well with it so we decided to invest in a second one. After researching the market extensively we agreed that this aircraft was the right one for our purposes. We are an air ambulance company and we were looking for an aircraft to be used in this way.
"However, some of our customers asked us if we would use this machine for VIP charter. Fortunately for us we signed a contract before the aircraft was introduced into service to provide charter flights for one of our customers within Turkey and the wider region. So our original intention to use this aircraft as an air ambulance is not what actually happened."
The second Learjet will predominantly be used for VIP and its finish and interior will suit this role. Dursun indicates that he will now be looking for a third aircraft of the same type to support Redstar's ambulance flights and grow the VIP charter side of the business.
"We had ordered stretchers that could be fitted in the aircraft," he continues. "However, based on demand in the market we are using this aircraft for VIP purposes and won't be installing the stretchers. Air ambulance demand will be covered by the addition of a third aircraft, which we hope will happen three to six months down the line."
Gulf Helicopters Company in Qatar has been a shareholder in Redstar since 2014, and as part of its growth strategy Redstar will look to introduce helicopters into service. "The type of helicopter hasn't been determined yet but that's also in our plans; we want to bring our fixed wing operations to a stable level and then start building capabilities for rotary," concludes Dursun.
